House Refurbishment and Extension

This project consisted of the structural design and detailing for the refurbishment and extension to a 1960s house on the edge of an Oxfordshire woodland.

The extension comprised a timber frame superstructure with a large glazed corner windows.  The timber frame was designed inhouse with Engineer I-Joists stud external walls clad with timber and metal clad roof over Engineered I-Joist Rafters.  As a considerable proportion of the ground floor external walls were glazed, this posed a challenge with the overall stability.  To overcome this, discreet steel bracing frames were hided within the timber frame walls to add the additional racking resistance required.  The extension is linked to the original house with a glazed link.  The house was refurbishment consisted of a new insulated timber frame over cladding the original masonry wall, new metal roof and a large glazed corner window.
